Member Spotlight: Stevie Peters
Happy Spring, everybody! I'm Stevie Peters (she/her), and I’m so happy to bring this April edition to you. I am the Oral Historian and Caretaker at King Manor Museum in Jamaica, Queens. Since last summer, I’ve been working on my independent research and penning a few poems alongside my fellow Gang members. I write about the intersection of genocide studies and culture…when not channeling my inner bard in verse.
Rufus King, a Founding Father who was a signer and framer of the Constitution, bought this house in 1805 and enlarged it in 1810, which means there is a lot of history within these walls. My best research and writing times are when I turn everything off just to hear the wind in the trees or the rain pattering the roof. Opening the shutters inspires me to sit at my desk as I notice the seasonal changes in the light that dances in the exhibition and office spaces. Whether it’s a crazy Saturday with visitors bouncing in and out of the comfortable stillness on the days the museum is closed, there’s truly something magical here.
Visitors always ask these questions, so let me answer a few. No, it isn’t scary to be here at night. Yes, I am allowed to have my pets here. This is the biggest yard my chihuahua has ever had, and my cat has been busy watching the birds that sit on the windowsills. No, Sundays are the caretaker’s day to eat pizza and play Minecraft so I can’t take you on a tour then (sorry, not sorry). And no, I have not seen any ghosts…but I have heard singing/whistling when nobody is here. We can ask my therapist whether a ghost hunter is truly necessary.
